Review: Evolution Rise Up Stout

Evolution Rise Up Stout
6.7% ABV
Evolution Craft Brewing Co., Salisbury, MD
12 oz btl
Served in Dogfish Head signature glass
Date on bottle: Bottled May 2013
Reviewed on 9/26/13

This stout pours a dark brown color with a decent toasty beige head that quickly dissipates.  Moderate lacing.

Smell has strong coffee, malt, dark chocolate, slight hops, some caramel, earthiness.

Taste consists of strong bitter coffee, chocolate, malt, caramel, some hops, espresso beans, hint of allspice.

Mouthfeel is fairly bitter on the palate from the strong coffee taste.  Some ending dryness.

Overall, this is a strong, coffee-tasting stout that's rich with chocolate and caramel flavors as well while still retaining its essential stout profile.  This one almost tastes like liquid chocolate-covered espresso beans.  It comes across as fairly earthy, with strong bitterness coming through. This is a coffee stout that lives up to its name and delivers.

My score: 92
